In the world of digital advertising, guesswork is a recipe for wasted budget. You wouldn’t launch a product without testing it, so why should your Google Ads strategy be any different? Every digital marketer has faced the dilemma: “I think this new bidding strategy will work better, but what if it tanks our performance?”

Traditionally, testing was a high risk endeavor. You either had to duplicate campaigns, leading to fragmented data, or make changes directly to a live campaign, risking immediate performance dips. Google Ads Campaign Experiments change all that. This feature provides a safe, scientific laboratory within your account where you can test theories, measure results, and make data-driven decisions without risking your entire campaign’s performance.

This article will walk you through everything you need to know about Google Ads Campaign Experiments: what they are, why they are a marketing superpower, the specific scenarios where they shine, and a detailed, step-by-step guide to running your very first successful test.

What are Google Ads Campaign Experiments and Why Are They Useful?

At its core, a Campaign Experiment is a built-in A/B testing framework for your existing Google Ads campaigns. Instead of making a change to your live “base campaign,” you create a “draft,” apply your proposed changes to that draft, and then schedule it as an experiment.

Google then splits your campaign’s traffic and budget between the base campaign (the control) and the experiment (the test arm) based on the percentage you choose. Both versions run simultaneously.

Imagine you are testing a new ad headline.

  • Base Campaign: “Buy Blue Widgets Today.”
  • Experiment Draft: “The Best Blue Widgets: Sale Ends Friday.”

You can decide to show the experiment to 50% of your audience, for example. Google handles the randomization, ensuring a fair test. While both run, you can compare their performance directly within a unified dashboard.

If your new bidding strategy doubles your Cost Per Acquisition (CPA), it only did so on the test portion, not across your entire account.

  • Test: Run a 50/50 split experiment comparing the two.

Testing a single new headline in an Responsive Search Ad is one thing; testing an entirely different messaging approach is another.

  • Hypothesis: “Highlighting a limited-time sale will increase our Click-Through Rate (CTR) compared to highlighting product features.”
  • Test: Create an experiment with entirely new headlines and descriptions focused on urgency vs. features.

Your ads can be perfect, but if your landing page doesn’t convert, you’re losing money. You can use experiments to split traffic between two different Final URLs.

Step by Step Instructions: How to Create a Google Ads Experiment

Here is how to navigate the Experiments page to set up your tests:

Step 1: Navigate to the Experiments Page

  • Log into your Google Ads account.
  • In the left page menu, click on Experiments.

Select All experiments to open your main experiments table (or cards view). From here, you can manage experiment statuses, view experiments across different channels, and select your specific experiment type.

Step 2: Choose Your Experiment Type

Depending on what you want to test, you will select from one of four main experiment types:

  • Custom Experiments: Available for App, Search, and Display campaigns. This is typically used to test Smart Bidding, keyword match types, landing pages, audiences, and ad groups.
  • Ad Variations: Available for Search campaigns. Use this to test text ads, responsive search ads, or a single change across multiple campaigns.
  • Video Experiments: Available for Video campaigns. Use this to determine which of your video ads is more effective on YouTube.
  • Performance Max Experiments: Use this to A/B test different features, settings, and campaigns, or to measure the uplift of using Performance Max campaigns.
  • Demand Gen Experiments: Test various videos, images, ad copy, and audience segments to determine which Demand Gen campaign delivers the lowest cost per conversion and the strongest overall performance.

Step 3: Set Up the Experiment

The setup process varies based on the type of test you chose in Step 2:

For Custom Experiments (Search/Display): Select a base campaign to run your experiment with. Next, set up the experiment and update the specific settings you’d like to test. (Note: You can now create an experiment without a draft). Google’s system will automatically create a new “trial campaign” for you with the new settings.

For Video Experiments: Set up 2 to 4 different groups (known as experiment arms). Choose the campaigns to include in the experiment, putting a different video ad in each campaign. Finally, select a success metric—either “Brand lift” or “Conversions”—to measure and compare performance.

Step 4: Monitor and Apply Results

Once your experiment is running, it is important to give the system enough time to evaluate performance.

Wait for Data: If your results show as “In Progress,” “Undecided,” or “Unavailable” in the Results column, Google recommends allowing the experiment to run for at least 4 to 6 weeks to collect enough data. If no recommendation is available after that time, you may need to adjust your budget or let the experiment run longer.

Take Action: Once your experiment produces better results at the end of the time period, you can take action. For Custom Experiments and Ad Variations, you can apply the winning settings directly back to the original base campaign (or replace the original campaign entirely). Alternatively, you can run the experiment as a new, independent campaign. For Video Experiments, use the data to decide which campaign to continue and allocate higher budgets to the winning ad.

Monitoring and Concluding Your Experiment

Once your experiment is running, resist the urge to peek and make decisions too early. Bidding strategy tests, in particular, need time for the algorithm to re-learn.

Analyzing Results

Google will provide a dashboard view that directly compares:

  • Base Campaign Performance vs. Trial Campaign Performance.
  • It will show the Difference (e.g., +15% Conversions).
  • It will indicate Statistical Significance. If a change is significant, a blue asterisk appears. For example, if you see Conversions +20%*, it means Google is confident that your change improved conversion volume.

The Final Decision: Next Steps

I recommend running an experiment for at least two weeks, but ideally a month, depending on your volume. You may need to let the experiment run longer if the percent of people you allocate to the arm is small.

Once you have sufficient data and statistical significance, you have three options:

  1. Apply Changes to the Original Campaign: If the experiment won, you can apply its changes directly back to your base campaign. The trial campaign will end, and your original campaign will resume 100% of the traffic, but now with the new settings (e.g., the new headlines or the new tCPA target).
  2. Convert Experiment to a New Campaign: The experiment will become a regular, independent campaign showing alongside your other campaigns. The original base campaign will be paused. This is a good option if you want to preserve the specific history of the winning version.
  3. End the Experiment: If the experiment lost, you simply end it. The draft arm is discarded, and your original base campaign returns to 100% of the traffic with no changes made.
